Captains Log (Starship Edgworth 2nds)

The Season so far

Encouraging wins against Standish & Flixton featuring good performances with the Bat by Sam Holden (77), Alex Waddicar, Umar & Jack Axford have given the team a belief that we can post or chase high totals regularly with a deep batting line up, however we paid a heavy price of a poor fielding effort in the first game of the season against a strong Darcy lever side, when dropped catches, indifferent ground fielding & too many extras combined to lose us the game by 30 runs despite a good late order fight back from Alex & Rob Bancroft.

Saturdays game was an all together different affair, winning the toss, batting & being 110-2 (Thornton 73 Holden 26)after 24 overs would seem like an impregnable position, but that was as good as it got, only adding another 85 runs in the remaining overs was disappointing to finish with a total of 195, you can never have too many runs when playing Little Hulton (events that were later to prove the point!)As usual the response from the opposition was aggressive, however we were taking regular wickets & i always thought that we would prevail given the oppostions cavalier approach to their task, what i hadnt factored in to the equation was an outstandnig knock from their no4 (Newton) & a ridiculously poor umpiring decision that should have seen him well stumped by a combination of the Bancroft Brothers, so bad was the decision that the umpire had to call the batsmen back when he was walking off, from a stumping!his innings from there on can only be described as an whirlwind (125 off approx 70-80 balls) 4 consequetive sixes over the pavilion off the skippers floaters & tweakers being the highlight (for some!)

Praise should be given to Mick Wright for manfully holding the assault in check, & on the whole the team should consider themselves unlucky, because if he had gone when only just in double figures, as should have been the case, then i feel confident that we would have won that game instead of losing by 6 wkts with 19 overs remaining!

This game also highlighted Michael Shores absence & his excellent form so far this season, his 5-32 V Standish being the highlight. Michael has been the stand out player for the team thus far & mystery still surrounds his none inclusion into the 1st team.
